The 1200 Calorie Diet is not something you can buy in a book or on CD. It is simply an eating plan in which you will count your calories staying at or slightly below the 1200 calorie mark.

The reason the number is so popular is that 1200 calories will usually provide a sufficient nutritional balance for most people, however still is low enough to allow for weight loss with the help of movement or exercise.

The majority of doctors and nutritionists will recommend eating no more than 1200 calories when trying to lose weight.

You will need to find a Calorie Calculator to allow you access to the calorie content of every food you eat. You will then have to count those calories throughout the day, doing your best to stay within the parameters of 1200.

What Can I Eat?

Well, actually you can eat anything you want! But remember, you must stay within the desired number of calories and that will be tough if you eat 1000 of them at the pizza parlor.

You will be much better served eating unprocessed whole foods such as fruits and vegetables and lean meats, foods with low caloric content.

Here is a sample one day 1200 calorie diet eating plan:

Breakfast:
1 cup Oatmeal Squares by Quaker
4 oz. skim milk (nonfat)
4 oz. orange juice
½ cup blueberries

Midmorning snack:
8 TLC Crackers – Kashi Original Whole Grain
1 piece mini Babybel light cheese

Lunch:
1 slice Flax & Fiber bread by Arnold
1 tbsp. peanut butter – natural creamy
1 medium apple
8 carrot sticks
water, unsweetened tea or coffee, or diet soda

Afternoon snack:
Your choice of a 100-calorie snack

Supper:
Make a large salad
1-3 cups spinach leaves with salad greens
½ chopped ripe red tomatoes
½ cup drained and rinsed chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
½ cup lowfat 1% cottage cheese
½ tbsp. salad dressing light Ranch
water, unsweetened tea or coffee, or diet soda
½ cup light vanilla ice cream
Total calories about 1215

What About Exercise?
Exercise is such a good thing. There really are no negatives. If you want to speed the fat burning process up, then you need to get out there and move.

I don’t care what you do. Just move! That being said, you may have trouble with intense exercise with this plan as the low number of calories will sap your energy pretty quickly but don’t use that as an excuse to do nothing….

Pros:

  • Expense–On this plan, there really is no expense!
  • Success-Low calorie diet plans will make you lose weight!
  • Freedom–You are free to choose any food you want!

Cons:

  • Convenience–It is a pain in the rear to count calories if you ask me (even though you didnt).
  • Hungry–You will probably feel very hungry during the reduction in calories.
  • Regain-You are very likely to regain your weight as soon as you return to your regular eating plan.

Conclusion:
The 1200 calorie diet can be effective for most people with the willpower to remain faithful. However, it is tough to reduce calories so be prepared.

I do think it is geared more toward women as men usually require a few more calories. But you will also need to remember to incorporate some activity into your daily routine. All in all, a pretty good choice if you are up to it.
