Apple Cider Vinegar Diet

The Original Apple Cider Vinegar Diet is another in a long line of plans that promote ridding the body of toxins through cleansing and fasting. This tough to drink concoction has been used for hundreds of years as a tonic for many ailments. Claims of benefits include migraine headaches, diabetes, chronic fatigue, arthritis and high blood pressure.

One of my students actually did a science project on whether it lowered cholesterol and concluded that it did.
The idea is that the pectin found in apples is mixed with the acidity in the vinegar to create a formula to cleanse the body and drop pounds. However, it’s still unclear whether there is a connection with weight loss.

It all started in the 1950s when a country doctor in Vermont (Dr. D. C. Jarvis) wrote a book (Folk Medicine  ) that fostered the belief that this mixture could be used as a weight loss agent. He claimed that regular consumption of the tonic would cause fat to be burned rather than stored.

The apple cider vinegar diet plan is simply the act of consuming 1-3 teaspoons of the vinegar (whew. that’s sour!) before each meal in the hope of losing weight. Any more than three is most likely beyond what your stomach can handle anyway, due to the strongly acidic nature of the vinegar.

That being said, there are now apple cider vinegar diet pills which are probably far easier to consume if you really want to try this diet out.

There is just little (if any) evidence proving that this plan is effective at creating weight loss but many people swear by it.

Pros:

  • Very inexpensive to try.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar contains many vitamins and minerals which may have healthful benefits.
  • Nothing else is needed for this diet.

Cons:

  • No clinical research that proves weight loss.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar can cause stomach problems when taken undiluted.

Conclusion:

This Original Apple Cider Diet is cheap and undoubtedly has health benefits but there is no scientific research that would allow me to promote this as a weight loss plan. This is one that you would have to try and hope for the best. I would recommend tablets over liquid though for obvious reasons if you have ever tasted the vinegar.
