Food Revolution Diet? Sounds rather cryptic!

In truth, it is not mysterious at all, it is a variation of a vegan diet which has proven to be very popular the last couple of years.  Let’s take a look at it.

The Food Revolution Diet is the creation of John Robbins, who is actually the sole heir to the Baskin-Robbins ice cream giant.

However, he has turned his back on the company to live his life a different way (not sure I could have done that!).  The diet is the offspring of his book; Food Revolution-How Your Diet Can Help Save Your life and Our World.Food Revolution

He is also the author of a best seller, Diet for a New America which emphasized the cruel treatment of animals that are raised for food.

In his Food Revolution, he revisits many of these issues and claims that the current method of food production is killing us slowly and the environment very quickly.

So what can you eat on this plan?

Well, this plan is based on whole food, basically very high fiber, plant based foods.

According to Robins, these foods are the healthiest and also best for the environment and the well-being of animal.

He also references research that demonstrates this type of diet reduces the risk of diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Some foods that are staples include fresh fruits and vegetables, rice, breads, beans, nuts, avocado, coconut, pasta and legumes among many others.

As far as exercise goes, this plan does not address it at all as it is totally focused on food choices.

Pros:

  • The book will make you think about your food choices.
  • Vegetarian diets are proven to have health benefits.
  • Very appealing to those who want to try a vegan diet.

Cons:

  • Not really a weight loss program.
  • There are no recipes or sample meal plans.
  • Many people have no desire to go “meatless”

Conclusion:

The Food Revolution Diet is not really a weight loss program. However, the eating advice in the book is based on science and is sound.  Following a vegan diet will guarantee you weight loss but in certain cases can omit essential nutrients if you aren’t careful.

The emphasis on food farming is slightly disgusting and may have been the purpose of writing the book.  It will have a huge impact on anyone when it comes to making food choices in the future.
