Lap Band Surgery | What No One Tells You!

Lap Band Surgery

Lap band surgery is fast becoming the most popular weight loss surgery in the world. It is a minimally invasive procedure in which an adjustable silicone band is placed around the top of the stomach.

The surgery creates a smaller stomach pouch that restricts the amount of food that can be eaten and a smaller stomach opening that slows the movement of food to help the patient feel full sooner.

A tube connects the band to an access port which is placed beneath the skin to allow the surgeon to make adjustments to the band by adding or removing saline.lap band surgery

This surgery is preferred by many people because it is considered safer, it is reversible, the hospital stay is shorter, and the recovery time is a little quicker.  There is no cutting of the stomach or intestines like gastric bypass surgery.

After The Surgery

The recovery time to return to normal activities is usually one week while the hospital stay itself is approximately 24 hours.

Surgery patients typically lose 50% of their excess body weight within two years.  Weight loss is normally only a healthy 1-2 pounds a week.

Remember that any surgery will have hazards. In addition to normal risks of medical procedures, this surgery could have problems.  Slippage of the band can occur as you lose weight and the stomach goes above the band, causing heartburn or vomiting. This can usually be fixed laparoscopically. Rarely, the band may erode into the inside of the stomach.
