Low Carbohydrate Drinks

Is there such a thing as low carb beverages?

Well yes…

Everyone likes a cool drink (some more than others!) and hot drinks aren’t bad either. But they can both be quite fattening. So how hard is it to find a drink that taste good while not overloading you with carbs? Well, here are a few that you can try out. Enjoy!

4 tablespoons heavy whipping cream

About 1 cup ice cubes

Whip and enjoy. A Pitcher of this lasts me all day, sometimes 2, depending. About 5 carbs, plus the crystal light.

Favourite Protein Shake Recipe

Category Low Carb Beverages

12 oz very cold diet orange soda

2 scoops vanilla flavoured protein powder, preferably Jay Robb

2 oz cream

1 cup or so of ice

Combine above in blender, blend for 1 1/2 minutes, pour and serve. Cream can be omitted if dairy sensitive.

Tastes fabulous. I don’t have it often due to citric acid but it is great in the morning especially if one is going to work out.

Protein Power Shake

Category Low Carb Beverages

1/2 cup raspberries, sliced strawberries or peaches, fresh or frozen

1/2 cup cottage cheese

1/4 cup plain yogurt

Crystal Light or Sugar Free Tang (already mixed, not the powder) to taste, enough to cover all the other ingredients in the blender jar.

The Frugal Gazette Diet Drink

Category Low Carb Beverages

7 Tbsp. powdered egg white

4 Tbsp. regular flavour, smooth texture Metamucil with no sugar or sweeteners

20 packets diet sweetener (I suppose you could use sugar to taste if you are watching out for fat and not for carbs)

1 c. and 2 Tbsp. non-fat dry milk

For flavour, ONE of the following:

4 Tbsp. powdered unsweetened cocoa

6 tsp. vanilla extract

1 package powdered unsweetened drink mix (“Kool-Aid”), strawberry or raspberry

1. Dry Mix: place egg whites, Metamucil, sweetener and dry milk into a bowl. Thoroughly mix all ingredients. Add the desire flavouring and store in a sealed container at room temperature. (If using vanilla extract, stir until evenly distributed and allow to dry in open container for 2-4 hrs)

2. To Reconstitute Drink Mix: Add 3 Tbsp. of dry drink mix to 1 ½ cups cold 1% or skim milk. For best results, use a blender, food processor or shake vigorously in closed container.

Protein Shake Base with Variations

Category Low Carb Beverages

(about 28g protein, 5g carb)

1/2 cup cottage cheese (rinsed in a strainer, if it has a sour taste)

1/2 cup pasteurized egg whites (Second Nature Eggs, has no onion or garlic like Egg Beaters do)

For each variation, add the following ingredients and whirr in blender

Variation 1 – Peach Melba

4 oz. (by weight) frozen sliced unsweetened peaches (about 6g carb)

Dash of DaVinci SF raspberry syrup

2 or 3 packets sweetener

1 cup water

Dash of cream optional

Variation 2 – Berry Shake

1/3 cup frozen unsweetened blueberries or 4 oz frozen unsweetened strawberries (about 6g carb)

2 or 3 packets sweetener

Dash of vanilla extract (about 1/2 tsp)

1 cup water

Dash of cream optional

Variation 3 – Chocolate Shake

1 tsp. chocolate extract, or 1 heaping tsp. cocoa

2 or 3 packets sweetener

Dash of vanilla extract (about 1/2 tsp.)

Dash of cream (few Tbsp.)

1/2 cup water

6 ice cubes

Shake Recipe

1/4 cup heavy cream

1/4 cup water

1/4 cup pasteurised egg substitute, like “EggBeaters”

1/4 cup cottage cheese: I strongly recommend Breakstone’s or Knudsen’s

1 tablespoon protein powder, any type

1/2 teaspoon good-quality sugar-free vanilla extract

6 Equal tablets, crushed

1 cup crushed ice (about 7 ice cubes)

Blend all ingredients on high speed until no visible pieces of ice or cottage cheese remain. This makes a vanilla shake containing roughly 330 calories, 5 carbs, 21 grams of protein and 25 grams of fat. For a bigger shake, use 1/3 cup each egg sub, cheese, water and cream instead of 1/4 cup each, add 3 more ice cubes, 3 more Equal tablets and a teaspoon more protein powder. The larger shake contains about 450 calories, 7 carbs, 34 grams of fat and 28 grams of protein.

1/2 little tub of crystal light plain iced tea granules

1 tub of the lemon aid flavour

1 package of sugar free orange Jello

I drink like 6 cups of this a day especially when its cold out….just keeps me going and keeps the hungries and the sweet tooth away!

1 2/3 c Irish whiskey

1 tsp. instant coffee

1 1/2 T cocoa powder

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1 tsp. almond extract

Mix cocoa and coffee powders with sweetener. Wet mixture with a bit of the whiskey to make a smooth paste. Meanwhile, place cream in a heavy pan and cook on LOW heat until reduced to 2 1/2 cups.

Cool cream to room temperature. Blend whiskey, paste, extracts and cream until smooth. Store in fridge no more than 2 weeks.

2 Necta sweet tabs (saccharine equalling 2 tsp. sugar)

“correct” amount of half & half for the coffee

1 oz syrup

1 tsp. psyllium powder (for fibre)

Hot Buttered Rum

Category Low Carb Beverages

1 batch of Jackie’s Quickie Ice Cream – on page 13-7 (Instead of 1/2 tsp. vanilla and 1/2 tsp. of liqueur of choice I just added 1 tsp. of vanilla extract)

1/2 cup butter

1 cup Sugar Twin brown sugar replacement

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

1/4 tsp. allspice

Mix the above together and store in the freezer. To make a drink add a heaping tablespoon of the Hot Buttered Rum batter to a cup along with 1 jigger of rum and add enough boiling water to fill the cup. Stir and top with nutmeg, and enjoy.

A side note: I had some serious doubts about Jackie’s Quickie Ice Cream working, but since I don’t have an ice cream maker I decided to try it. It worked great. Took less than 15 minutes for the ice cream to set and freeze. And, the added bonus, it tastes great!

Hot Chocolate

1/2 cup cream

2/3 cup water

1 tsp. unsweetened cocoa

1 packet sugar substitute

1/2 tsp. vanilla

Place all ingredients in saucepan. Heat to boiling point, but do not boil. Stir constantly. Serve in mug. Total carbohydrate grams: 5.4.

“Bailey’s and Coffee”

Category Low Carb Beverages

1 cup hot decaffeinated coffee (this is usually prepared at night…no caffeine then)

1 tbsp. heavy cream

1 tbsp. Jack Daniels

1 tsp. Splenda (or to taste)

It is soooo good!!

Category Low Carb Beverages

1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp. Splenda

2 eggs, separated

1/4 tsp. salt

2 cups heavy cream

2 cups water

1 tsp. vanilla

Brandy or rum flavouring to taste

1/2 cup whipping cream, whipped

Ground nutmeg or cinnamon

Beat 1/2 cup Splenda with egg yolks. Add salt, stir in 2 cups cream and the water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture coats a spoon. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Beat egg whites until foamy then gradually add remaining Splenda, beating to soft peaks. Add to cooked mixture and blend thoroughly. Add vanilla and flavouring. Chill at least 3-4 hours. Pour into punch bowl or cups. Dot with “islands” of whipped cream. Sprinkle with nutmeg or cinnamon.

“Egg-less” Eggnog

3 cups cream

3 cups water

1/3 cup sugar substitute

1 tsp. vanilla

2 tsp. rum flavoring

1 small package sugar-free instant vanilla pudding

12 eggs, separated

1 cup granulated sugar (replace with Splenda)

1 cup bourbon whiskey

1 cup cognac

1/2 teaspoon salt

3 pints heavy cream

Grated Nutmeg

In an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks with the sugar until thick and lemon colored. Slowly add the bourbon and cognac, while beating at a slow speed. Chill several hours.

1. Add the salt to the egg whites and beat until almost stiff, or until the beaten whites form a peak that bends slightly. Whip the cream until stiff. Fold the whipped cream into the yolk mixture, then fold in the beaten egg whites. Chill one hour.

1. When ready to serve, sprinkle the top with freshly grated nutmeg. Serve in punch cups with a spoon.

Category Low Carb Beverages

In a blender, combine the following:

2/3 cup Cuervo Gold or better

2/3 cup lemon juice (fresh is best, but bottled is easier)

1/3 cup Cointreau or if you’re feeling realllllly decadent, Grand Marnier

Fill with ice and a little water so it’s not too slushy. Blend until it sounds done (it’s a Zen thing 😉

If you use cheaper booze, they’re not as smooth, and I used to add sugar to cut the zing. With the good stuff, there is no zing, and it’s knocks you on your ass in nothing flat :-). Oh, yeah. Watch out for “ice cream” headache!

This is a nice way to get hammered in the privacy of your own home 😉 I skip the salt, but whatever floats your boat, babe. 😉

Egg Not

Category Low Carb Beverages

2 cups Skim milk (sub. half cream – half water (?)

2 packages substitute sweetener

2 tsp. vanilla extract

1/4 tsp. rum extract

1/2 cup egg substitute(thawed if frozen)

1 tsp. nutmeg

Combine milk, sweetener, vanilla and rum extract. Beat with egg substitute until well blended. Chill and stir before serving.

One serving (1/3 recipe): Carbs (w/milk) 10 grams

I’ve made this by this recipe (with milk) and it’s very delicious. Haven’t tried it with cream yet.

LC Kahlua

3 cups boiling water

4 cups Splenda

1 vanilla bean

3/4 cup freeze-dried coffee (I use decaf)

750ml bottle of vodka

Add Splenda to 2 1/2 cups of the boiling water. Simmer for 20 minutes and then allow to cool. Dissolve the coffee in the remaining 1/2 cup of boiling water. Then allow everything to cool completely. Add all the ingredients together in a sealed container and allow to stand somewhere coolish for 2-3 weeks. Take out and shake container at least once a day to keep the Splenda mixed it. Tastes heavenly with some cream, and one needn’t feel *terribly* guilty over it, just a little bit guilty because of the vodka. 🙂

The “Other” Grande Marnier

1 26-oz. bottle of brandy (does not need to be high quality – good brandy is a waste)

1 tbsp. glycerin (druggists have this)

1 large Seville orange

1 cup sugar (Splenda?)

8 oz. vodka

Thoroughly clean a glass container with an opening at least four inches in diameter. Heat brandy slowly, just until Splenda dissolves… DO NOT BOIL OR EVEN SIMMER!!! – just warm. Pour into glass jar. Wrap orange in a cat’s cradle of string so that the orange is not pierced. Lower into the glass jar so that it does not touch the brandy/Splenda mixture. (Using skewers to support the orange on the jar rim works well – run the skewers under the knot on the top of the orange). Cover the top of the jar with Saran wrap or aluminum foil.

Now comes the patience… put away for at least 30 to 40 days. The back corner of a kitchen cupboard works well. After a month or so, the orange isn’t orange anymore – all the oils have dripped into the brandy. Throw away the orange. Add the vodka and glycerin (if you stall on glycerin, omit it, it only effects the texture/stickiness of the liqueur). Stir and serve.

I have done this often with sugar, but never with Splenda. It is the brandy fumes that leach out the orange oils – the sugar, I think, is just for taste. I can see no reason why it would not work just the same.

Irish Creme Liqueur

Makes about 5 cups

1 pint or half liter bottle Irish whiskey (brandy or rum works fine, but ain’t Irish)

1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated milk)

1 cup heavy cream

4 eggs

2 Tablespoons chocolate syrup

2 teaspoons instant coffee

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon almond extract.

Combine all ingredients in blender until smooth. Store tightly covered in refrigerator up to one month. Shake or stir well before serving.

To make this LC friendly, the condensed milk needs to be changed to cream plus sweetener, and the chocolate syrup needs to be changed to a sugarfree chocolate syrup. The rest of the recipe is OK.

Simply Good Shake

1/4 c. heavy cream

1/2 c. water

2 heaping tablespoons splenda or equal

6 frozen strawberrys

1 t vanilla extract

Blend till smooth. Yum.

Low Carbohydrate Hot Cocoa

3/4 cup boiling water

1 Tbs. cocoa powder

1 Tbs. Davinci Gourmet Sugar Free Hazelnut syrup (optional)

1 tsp. stevia

1/4 cup cream

Mmmm….mmmm….steamy chocolate! 🙂

Breakfast Shake

4 oz aloe vera or water

4 oz unsweetened soy milk

4 oz plain full fat yoghurt

1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder

2 tbsp. flaxmeal

2 tbsp. flax seed oil

1 tbsp. psyllium husks (I use Colon Cleanse brand)

Some DaVinci sugar-free syrup (I like orange or raspberry)

Blend on high for a few seconds, then add 7-8 small ice cubes and blend for another couple of minutes. I love this, plus it’s an easy way to get the psyllium and flax seed oil in.

Nutella Mocha

OOH! HAVE to share this! Got some Splenda-sweetened Swiss Miss last night and mixed 1 packet into a large cup of decaffeinated coffee and 1 teaspoon of DaVinci’s Splenda-sweetened hazelnut syrup… OMG! Died and gone to heaven!

Liquid Dessert

1/2 can Canfield’s Chocolate soda

2 T. heavy cream

1 shot of liquid coffee concentrate

Couple of ice cubes

Stir and enjoy

I think if I blended it, it would be damn close to a Frappacino . It also reminds me of Bailey’s Irish Crème.

Low-Carb Pina Colada

My recipe for Pina Colada (non-alcoholic) is 2 scoops Atkins vanilla protein shake mix (probably any vanilla protein shake mix would do), 1 cup water, 2 packs equal, 8 ice cubes, 1 teaspoon pineapple extract, 1/2 teaspoon coconut extract. Mix in a blender till smooth and creamy. Wonderful. I’m sure you could add alcohol to it if you wanted to. That wouldn’t add any carbs. Enjoy.

Low-Carb Chai Tea Concentrate

(makes 2-4 drinks)

2 cups water

3 Bigelow Darjeeling Blend tea bags (or any other black tea of your choice)

4 1 1/2 in. slices fresh ginger (use vegetable peeler)

1 2 in. cinnamon stick

4 whole cloves

1 teaspoon powdered cardamom

1 dash nutmeg

1 6 in. vanilla bean (cut up into 1 in. pieces)

1/3 cup Splenda

Bring 2 cups of water to a boil and toss in teabags then all other ingredients except Splenda. Reduce heat and simmer about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; stir in Splenda to dissolve.

Drink hot or cold – I drink this either 50/50 with unsweetened soy milk or (usually) with some cream or half-and-half splashed in. Refrigerate leftover concentrate.

LowCarb Dreamsicle in a Glass

1 can of diet orange soda

2 Tbls heavy cream

1 or 2 scoops of vanilla flavoured egg protein powder.

Ice, if desired.

Blend at medium speed for 1 minute.
