How Did Christina Aguilera Lose Weight?
It would be hard to find someone in the U.S. who has not heard of Christina Aguilera.
The Grammy Award-winning singer is known far and wide for her amazingly powerful voice. She has delivered such hits as “What a Girl Wants”, “Come On Over Baby”, “Lady Marmalade”, and “Genie in a Bottle”.
However, she really became mainstream with her job as a judge on the hit show, “The Voice”, a reality based singing competition.
Aguilera has been around seemingly forever, with her career starting as just a child on the television show, “The All New Mickey Mouse Club”. Fellow cast members included Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling, and her soon-to-be-rival, Brittany Spears.
And yet Aguilera’s career has always been dogged (as has many female artists) by conversations about her weight. Throughout her admittedly successful life, she has experienced many weight fluctuations and struggles.
And social media has not always been kind (big surprise).
Let’s take a closer look at her weight loss battles and how she is doing now in 2020.
2008: The Beginning Of Her Weight Struggles
For the first several years of her career, Christina became well known for her flat stomach and skimpy outfits. She was a Teen Sensation following in Brittany Spears’s footsteps.
Her first album in 1999 sold 10 million copies and got her a Grammy for Best New Artist. But there was no doubt that part of her success (and that of Spears) was that they were both attractive with thin, athletic bodies.
Christina enjoyed the fame, accolades, and magazine covers as every young girl would. She ate poorly during this time period, but genetics allowed her to remain thin so weight was never a major concern..
But all that began to change in 2008.
This was the year that the singer gave birth to her first child who was named Max. As mothers tend to do, she put on a lot of baby weight and suddenly wasn’t the sexy young teen pop star anymore.
For the first time in her life, Christian began to hear criticism for her body. According to the singer, it was hurtful but made her realize a change was needed.
She desperately looked for something that could keep her motivated to change her poor eating and exercise habits.
Luckily that something was on the way.
2009: The Burlesque Diet
Christina caught a huge break when she was picked for a starring role (along with Cher), in an upcoming movie, “Burlesque”.
The movie sees Christina play a girl named Ali from a small town that moves to Los Angeles.
She lands a job as a cocktail waitress in a burlesque club, but soon decides that she wants to be one of the sexy dancers performing on stage instead.
Needless to say, it was imperative that she slimmed down and got in better physical shape for this movie role.
And so, she did.
In fact, reportedly, Christina lost 40 pounds in less than 4 months after accepting the acting gig.
Christina hired a world-class trainer, Tee Sorge, who developed a hard-core workout for the singer.
The workout consisted of intense exercise 5 days a week for 90-minute sessions with oversight by the trainer.
The 90 minutes was broken down into 40 minutes weight training, 40 minutes cardio, and 10 minutes stretching. Sorge changed the workout every session to reduce the chance of her body becoming used to the workout and stop changing.
Some of the cardio exercises included dancing, boxing, and running on a treadmill. Weight training focused on the entire body approach by working back, shoulders, chest, biceps, triceps, legs, and abs. She really tried to shred her abs by doing 300-500 sit-ups and other ab-focused exercises.
As far as nutrition, the singer made a few changes. According to her trainer Sorge, she eliminated all white foods from her diet. These foods include rice, sugar, and flour (great idea!)
Sorge quoted at the time, “She’s always been good. But now she’s sticking to whole grains and lean proteins. Her goal now is just to be fit.’
Christina was ecstatic at the results and told anyone who would listen that she was feeling attractive and sexy.
“AS YOU FEEL YOUR BODY GETTING STRONGER, YOU BECOME MOTIVATED TO BE IN THE GYM. WHEN YOU’RE DEFINED, IT’S SEXY. I EXERCISE BECAUSE IT MAKES ME FEEL GOOD.”
The combination of healthy eating along with a serious workout plan will do wonders for anyone, and Christina was no exception. For anyone who has watched “Burlesque”, it would be hard to argue that she doesn’t look fantastic.
But could she maintain that healthy lifestyle as she aged and had more children?
2010: Get Ready To Be Fat Shamed
Her dream life began to wilt in 2009 as she and her husband Jonathan Bratman separated. A divorce was imminent and became final in 2010. Stress eating became a normal occurrence in Christina’s life.
At the same time, her movie that she had invested in so heavily physically and psychologically was panned by most critics although she did receive praise for her acting ability.
Incredibly, her new album “Bionic” also flopped by industry standards in 2010 completing the worst year in the young singers’ life.
Serious weight gain.
During this time, social media was beginning to take a foothold among the world’s youth (with all ages soon to follow). The result was she began to receive comments about her weight constantly. The tabloid magazines were very unkind as always, but the explosion of millions online expressing opinions about how much weight she had gained was devasting.
Christina did what all celebrities do when they are overweight. Make public statements about how happy they are with their body:
“I DON’T WEIGH MYSELF,” WHAT LOOKS GOOD ON ONE PERSON MIGHT NOT LOOK GOOD ON ANOTHER BODY TYPE. I HAPPEN TO BE VERY CONFIDENT IN MY OWN SKIN. IT TAKES TIME TO GET TO THAT PLACE. BUT, IT’S ALL ABOUT EMBRACING YOURSELF AND YOUR BODY.”
Not surprisingly, she continued to gain weight while trying to resurrect her career. She still had the big voice but where would the next big break come from?
Lucky for her, television came calling.
2011: The Voice Hires An Amazing Voice
Christina was hired to be a singing coach on a new reality show, “The Voice” in 2011.
The show took off and became iconic. And while it provided a great income and helped revitalize her career, the new coach continued to be criticized from all angles about how fat she was. And she continued to swear that she was happy with her body.
“I’VE BEEN THROUGH MY HIGHS; I’VE BEEN THROUGH MY LOWS; I’VE BEEN THROUGH THE GAMUT OF ALL THINGS IN THIS BUSINESS, BEING TOO THIN. BEING BIGGER. I’VE BEEN CRITICIZED FOR BEING ON BOTH SIDES OF THE SCALE. IT’S NOISE I BLOCK OUT AUTOMATICALLY. I LOVE MY BODY. MY BOYFRIEND LOVES MY BODY. MY SON IS HEALTHY AND HAPPY, SO THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS TO ME.”
After 3 seasons on the show, she was replaced by Shakira for season number 4 in 2013. During this hiatus, she began to practice Yoga and attempt to change her poor eating habits. She managed to drop a huge amount of weight during this year (she claimed 40 pounds). However, the rumor spread that the singer had undergone liposuction which she denied vehemently. After one year off, she was ready to return to work.
2013: The Meal Delivery Service
After returning to work, Christina found herself gaining weight again. In addition, she was pregnant with her second child.
Terrified of becoming fat, she switched gears and decided to try a meal delivery service call Fresh Diet. The service delivered three meals and two snacks per day to her front door. Her plan which was geared toward weight loss cost a staggering $3000 a month.
The meals consisted of low-carb fare, plenty of protein and good fats including avocado and olive oil. The meals amounted to 1600 calories a day.
During this time of changing her eating habits, she also continued yoga and made the wise decision to rehire her former trainer, Tee Sorge, who whipped her into shape for the movie “Burlesque”. He replicated his early success with the singer and according to reports, Christina lost over 5 pounds of fat during this time and added plenty of lean mass.
Were the days of losing and gaining weight finally over?
So, Is She Fat Or Fit Now?
Unfortunately, like so many of us, Christina has struggled with weight issues her entire adult life. So the reality is that she has never been able to lose weight and keep if off permanently.
Her greatest successes came when she did what I always preach about; proper eating and intense, varied exercise including weight training.
However, she seemingly has been unable to stick with it for an extended period of time.
And like so many others, she has resorted to dumb, unhealthy fad diets. One such diet that she tried was The Color Diet.
This is a ridiculous diet based on a book of the same name. The premise is to eat based on the color and texture of her food.
So, each meal would be made up of four food items: one soft, one crunchy, one hot, and one cold. The four items must all be bold, contrasting colors. She had a personal chef creating these meals for several months.
It goes without saying but I will say it anyway: this didn’t work very well.
She also tried diet pills and natural weight loss supplements.
The problem is since having her second child in 2014, Christina has returned to eating junk food and embracing other unhealthy habits. Her weight has continued to yo-yo and she has persisted in saying that she is happy with her weight.

However, the truth will not change. The singer has only been successful with healthy weight loss when she hired a trainer and changed her eating habits.
Did She Have Cosmetic Surgery?
I am no doctor, but I feel fairly confident that Christina had some help with her weight loss early in her career. She definitely appears to have had breast implants done although she never admitted it.
And now, in 2020, her facial appearance appears to have changed dramatically.
And in reality, there is nothing wrong with that. People have free-will and can do what they want to do with their money.
However, the problem I have is that you hold yourself up as someone who is happy with her body and then take shortcuts to change it. Fair or not, Christina is adored by potentially millions of young girls who follow her on social media and television.
I would love to see all female celebrities embrace their fame and practice healthy habits that young girls can emulate.
Christina Aguilera’s weight loss journey has been a battle and it appears that battle will continue.
